NASA astronauts Drew Morgan and Christina Koch are expected to venture outside the International Space Station to perform the second of five planned spacewalks to replace aging batteries on the P6 truss segment.
Six lithium-ion batteries batteries were brought to the outpost via the Kounotori 8 spacecraft. Over the course of a month, several spacewalks will be performed to replace the older nickel-hydrogen batteries with the new, more-advanced units.
This is the third of four sets of spacewalks that have been conducted since January 2017 to replace the outpost’s nickel-hydrogen batteries with lithium-ion units. A fourth set will be performed sometime next year on the S6 truss after the Kounotori 9 spacecraft is launched toward the ISS.
